Ferret Outdoor Safety Tips

Ferrets love to go outdoors. As a ferret owner, you have to decide if you want to take your ferret outside. If you do, be sure to follow these safety tips to protect your ferret while it is outside.

  • Put the ferret on a harness and a lease when going for a walk
  • Set up and outdoor playpen. – There are some available commercially and are made of wire
  • Ferrets DO NOT tolerate heat or cold well. Be careful with the outside temperatures
  • Ferrets will not be able to find their way home. Therefore, watch your ferret carefully to keep it from escaping.

What to Do If Your Ferret Runs Away

As soon as you notice your ferret has escaped, you need to take immediate action. Ferrets cannot take care of themselves in the wild. They are susceptible to heat and cold, not to mention scared humans.

If your ferret is missing, do the following:

  • Call local animal shelters
  • Call exotic vets
  • Make Posters an Hang Up in Neighborhood
  • Go Door-to-Door as many people do not know what a ferrets looks like. They may also think it is a rat.
    • Give description of your ferret
    • Give information on how to contact you

Walking Around the Neighborhood – This leaves a scent and your ferret may be able to follow your scent home
