The Savannah cat breed is one of the largest and most exotic cat breeds around.

With a price range of $1,000 – $15,000 for a Savannah cat, it is no shock for people to want to find out more about why the cats cost so much and how to know if the cat is worth the high price tag.

What is a Savannah Cat?

Savannah cat is the name given to the offspring of a domestic cat and a Serval—a medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat. The unusual cross became popular among breeders at the end of the 20th century, and in 2001 the International Cat Association accepted it as a new registered breed. Savannahs are much more social than typical domestic cats, and they are often compared to dogs in their loyalty. They can be trained to walk on a leash and even taught to play fetch.

Are Savannah cats illegal to own?

The short answer is yes and no. The longer answer will depend on where you live and what type of Savannah cat you wish to own.

For example, in New York, you cannot own a Savannah cat which is less than a F5. This means it has to be a 5^th generation cat. In other states, it is legal to own all the levels.

In states like Florida, you will need a permit to own a Savannah and that includes some extensive training.

It will also depend on the county you live in as well. Larger cities and counties make up their own laws regarding the cats. Therefore, you will need to check with your local and state animal control to determine the law.

What is a Normal Savannah Cat Price?

Males are always more expensive than females. This is due to the rarity of males and the need for reproduction. Therefore, if you want to own a male expect to pay twice as much.

Females will vary depending on the F rating. F1 Savannah cats will be the most expensive than an F2 and a F2 will be more expensive than an F3. This is due to the amount of Serval blood.

After looking around, I found a chart which is pretty much what I found to be the average price. Of course, the price will also vary on the quality of the individual cat as show cats are more valuable than your average pet cat.

 How Large Does A Savannah Get?

Savannah cats are among the biggest cats in the world, with males getting up to 50 pounds. Females are considerably smaller but still quite large. Like the other aspects of the cat, the size will also depend on their F rating.

The Savannah Cat is a very tall, long, and lean cat so the weight can be very misleading. The F1 generation weighs approx. 16 – 20 lbs. Each subsequent generation will decrease in size but will stabilize at the third or fourth generation. The Savannah Cat will grow for three years, the first two years they get their height and length and the third year they will put on muscle and weight. F1′s range in size from 17 to 25 pounds. They will stand approximately 16-18 inches at the shoulder and are 22-24 inches long from chest to rump. F2′s will range in size from 16 to 23 pounds and will stand 15-18 inches at the shoulder and 20-22 inches long. F3 ‘s will range in size from 14 to 20 pounds and will stand approximately 14-17 inches at the shoulder and 18-21 inches long. F4′s and F5′s will range in size from 14 to 18 pounds and will stand 13 to 15 inches at the shoulder and 16-18 inches long. Remember, these are all tall, lanky weights.

Do the Savannah cats get along well with other pets and children?

As the videos show, Savannah cats generally get along with other kids and animals. The first video is a child playing with a Savannah cat and the second is 2 Savannah kittens playing near a dog. Basically, a well socialized Savannah kitten will have no problem with family and pets.
