Training Yourself to Train Your Pet

Training Tip: Basset Hounds are Stubborn

Olivia: The Stubborn Basset Hound

Olivia is a (our special) Basset Hound. For those of you who don’t know, this means she likes to pretend she is asleep and doesn’t want to move. Since, I have been working on this behavior (a month now)***** she has gotten better. She now only pretends for a few seconds before moaning and moving.

This behavior can’t be corrected here. This is a leadership situation. I had to establish my position as pack leader in other situations to gain this respect. Many people make the mistake of trying to force a Basset Hound in moving in the wrong situation. This only causes frustration and pain for both you and the dog.

Establishing Yourself as Pack Leader

One of the things you want to do with any dog is establish yourself as the pack leader. Dogs do not question the leader and will do exactly what the leader says without a fight. Basset Hounds generally do not want to be a pack leader but they won’t respect you if you don’t step up. Here are some tips to help you step into the role of pack leader.

  1. Brush your dog everyday. Grooming is easy and sets you up as the leader
  2. Feed your dog on a schedule. When you control the food, you establish dominance
  3. Make your dog sit at your feet while you work, eat and watch TV.

***** Update October 25, 2011: Olivia has been cured of her stubbornness. She now moves without a squabble and people consider her a “perfect” dog. It only took 6 months LOL
