As Halloween approaches and the nights turn cold excitement fills the air. For our house, it means there will be trick-or-treaters coming by. This also means the doorbell will ring quite a bit. For our newest addition this is going to be a fun year.
Stop the Barking
You could try to avoid the problem my placing the dog outside. Halloween is overwhelming. If you are going to get upset, it won’t do you or the dog any good. It is not the time to train, when you are upset. Wait till you are calm and collected.
We are going to use this as a prime training time. We are going to set her up for success. Olivia get ready to SHINE BABY!
Supplies:
- Lemon filled water gun
- Baby gate
- Newspaper (No I won’t hit her) The newspaper is to make noise to move her out of the way.
Stop the Barking Procedures
Ok, so when the doorbell rings I will be set. Olivia will bark and head for the door. I will be ready to block. Just in case I will have the gate at the door so she can’t escape. I will say “Shhh”. If she does not, I will squirt the lemon juice in the mouth. Then praise her when she does.
Olivia, along with the other dogs, will also not be allowed to enter the hallway to the front door. The front door will not be opened with dogs in the hall. They will be commanded to “Back Up” before door is opened.
If at any point, I start to get upset the training ends. She will be sent to another room for the remainder of Halloween. She will be banished from the living room.
