Dog owners across the board want to know what can dogs eat and not eat. Which foods are safe to feed dogs and which foods are harmful. Since no loving pet owner wants to hurt their fur kid, we have created a list of foods dogs can eat and foods dogs cannot eat. This article will be about the foods dogs can eat. To find out the foods dogs cannot eat, read the article Dangerous Foods for Dogs.

Keep in mind, every dog is different and this is general information for all dogs.

Human Food Safe for Dogs

The list of safe human food for dogs is quite long. Therefore, if your precious pup is giving you the sad eyes and you cannot help but to slip your furry friend a treat, there are safe human foods you can give your puppy. As long as these foods are given in moderation, your dog will be just fine consuming these human foods.

Peanut Butter

While some puppies will have allergies to peanut butter, most dogs do just fine. In fact, peanut butter is a great training aide and I highly recommend using peanut butter for teaching your dog many tricks. It also works well when attempting to give your puppy much needed medication.

Cooked Chicken

If you ever run out of dog food, then slipping your dog some cooked chicken is perfect. As long as it is not smothered in a sugary barbecue sauce, cooked chicken is a great dinner for your pet. (Although, it may start a begging trend when you eat chicken.)

Cheese

Although, some dogs experience lactose intolerance, most dogs do just fine with cheese. As a kid, we use to call it the dog diet (we gave dogs half our cheese cutting our calories.)

I also highly recommend the use of cheese for training. It works very good for more advanced training. Since the cheese can “stick” to items, cheese works well teaching “Touch It”. It is also great for teaching service dogs to hit the button to open doors.

Lean Meats

Chicken has already been covered in safe foods for dogs. Even though chicken is the best meat for dogs, cuts of lean meat are also acceptable. As along as the meat does not have loads of fat, it is safe for the dog’s digestion system. High fatty foods will cause stomach upset.

Other Safe Foods for Dogs:

  • Bananas
  • Melons – watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon
  • Berries – fresh or frozen
  • Apples
  • Asparagus
  • Citrus Fruits – take the rind off first
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Cinnamon
  • Coconut
  • Green Beans – good for weight control
  • Sunflower Seeds – salt-free is the key

Can Dogs Eat Peppers?

Pepper will cause stomach upset and mild indigestion in some dogs. However, they are considered safe to eat.

Can Dogs Eat Pineapple?

Pineapple is often touted as a cure for Coprophagia (eating poo). It is thought to change the taste of the feces making the dogs not want to eat their own poo. It is safe but it does not work often. However, if you just want to share your pineapple, then go for it.

Can Dogs Eat Broccoli?

Broccoli is the subject of much controversy right now. Some people say broccoli is dangerous for dogs and others say it is a cancer prevention. From all the research I have done, broccoli is safe in small amounts. It can be added to fill the dog’s vegetable need. However, larger amounts of broccoli can cause mild discomfort and indigestion.

As for a cancer prevention, broccoli as part of a healthy diet is a good thing. It is not going to be a cure all for cancer.

Can Dogs Eat Pickles?

Pickles are safe technically. Again, too many pickles can cause diarrhea and indigestion. Like pineapple, pickles are also proclaimed to be a cure for Coprophagia. Again, pickles may or may not help depending on your particular dog.

Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin?

Not only are pumpkins good for your dog, they are recommended by vets. To keep your dog safe, remove the seeds and the skin. Other than that, let fido have some pumpkin.
