It’s Me or the Dog Host Shares Positive Dog Training Techniques

In the world of dog training, there are three basic methods “positive dog training”, “traditional training” (punishment training), and “dominance training” made popular by Cesar Milan. Victoria Stilwell, falls into the positive dog training method.

Personally, I use a bit of all of them. I lean more heavily toward positive training and dominance training. However, some of my techniques do include what some people would consider punishment.

Positive Dog Training in Stilwell’s Own Words

Victoria Stilwell, the host of Animal Plant’s hit series, “It’s Me or the Dog,” shares her insights and expertise with pet owners struggling to train their dogs. She depicts what positive dog training is in simple to understand words.

“If you see a behavior you like in your dog, then you reward it. And if you reward it, there is a good chance of it happening again,” said Stilwell, an opponent of punitive, dominance-based training techniques.

Stillwell Puts Her Skills to the Test

For those at the seminar who were not convinced of her techniques, she demonstrated the techniques live on stage. Remember, she is highly trained and she knows exactly how to handle dogs. The average person would not be able to repeat her example.

Stilwell demonstrated her techniques on-stage with several shelter dogs from Forever Paws. Some of the dogs had food aggression or impulse control problems. Using treats and gentle reinforcement, within minutes she managed to have them calmly following her commands.<
"She had these shelter dogs literally eating out of her hand," said New Bedford Animal Control Officer Emmanuel Maciel, who said he uses positive reinforcement techniques and teaches them to pet owners.

Conclusion on Positive Dog Training

“The training techniques are so simple. Anyone at home could do the same thing with the amount of time they spend with their dog on a daily basis,” Maciel said.

I totally agree with this comment. Anyone can do the same thing and receive the same results with their dog or puppy. Positive training does work and it is a good way to bond with your new puppy or teach an old dog new tricks. I would not recommend anyone going to an animal shelter and trying out the techniques. This level of skill takes years of experience but it is still nice to see the positive effect it has on dogs.
