Dog Training Advice: Stop Your Dog from Chasing Cars

Dogs love to chase. It can be fun for you and your dog. However, when your dog starts chasing cars, the chances of your dog getting hit by one goes dramatically up. So what do you do to stop your dog from chasing cars?

Prevention

Don’t Let Your Dog Play Chase Outside

The first step in training your dog to not trace cars is not allow them to play chase outside. If your dog never learns to associate chasing with outside, then they are less likely to begin chasing cars.

Dogs should also be on a leash outside. This will also prevent dogs from getting into the habit of chasing cars. You want your dog to be safe and chasing cars is not safe for your dog.

Teach Your Dog Basic Obedience Commands

Basic obedience commands are always nice to have. Sit, stay, down, stop, and leave it are always nice to have in your arsenal for immediate use. However, an excited dog may not always listen to these commands. Even the most well trained dogs have been known to ignore commands in times of extreme excitement.

Stopping a Dog that Already Chases Cars

Once the behavior has started, it is much more difficult to stop. At this point, you will have to work on protecting your dog. This means protecting your dog when you are not around to physically stop your dog from chasing the car.

Build a Kennel

Kennels are a good way to let your dog run around while protecting your dog. Your dog can run around in the kennel but not get to the car. Make sure the kennel is tall enough where the dog cannot jump over it. Kennels may have to be six to seven feet tall even for small dogs.

Please do not chain dogs to trees. This tends to make dogs mean and territorial.
